July 12: St. Veronica

History

According to Christian legend, when Jesus was carrying the Cross, a woman named Veronica stepped forward and wiped His face with her veil. (You might remember hearing about Veronica’s act of love for Jesus in the Stations of the Cross devotion during Lent.) The cloth miraculously developed an image of the Lord’s face (see a photo here). Veronica’s veil was carefully protected, and people were even cured by touching it. The veil has been preserved at Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City since the year 1297.

Activity

Today, as a family, pray the Litany of the Holy Face. It’s long, but very easy to do, and it helps us remember how precious Jesus is to us. One family member should read out each line (invocation), and then everybody else responds "Have mercy on us."
