July 11: St. Olga

History

St. Olga was not like other saints who wanted to be holy all their lives. In fact, Olga was a cruel woman for a long time. She was married to Prince Igor I of Russia, and when he was murdered, she responded by killing the people who murdered them and hundreds of their family and friends. She killed other people, too, when they did things she didn’t like. But when she was an old woman, Olga learned about Jesus. She was sorry for all the evil things she had ever done and asked God to forgive her and help her turn her life around. Olga became the first Russian to become a Christian. By then, her son was king, and she tried to convince him to become a Christian, but he refused. It was her grandson, Vladimir I, who made Christianity the national religion.

Activity

When Saint Olga learned about Jesus, her whole life changed. Most of us are very lucky that we have known about Jesus all our lives. But today, you can experience a little of what it was like for Saint Olga by having a backwards day. Try to do everything backwards. You can wear your clothes backward – or maybe put on pajamas instead of your regular clothes in the morning. You can eat dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner. How else can you do things backwards today?

Saint Olga, pray for us!
