St. Faustina image at a church in Warsaw, Poland Photo by Mateusz Opasinski |
History
Saint Faustina led a very simple,
quiet life while she kept a very big secret. For years, Sister Faustina saw
visions of Jesus and heard a message about mercy that He wanted her to spread
through the whole world. Sister Faustina told her spiritual director about this
and her superiors at the convent, but nobody else. She wrote about God’s mercy
in her diary, and commissioned a painting of the Divine Mercy Image. She also
wrote the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a devotion that is prayed using Rosary
beads. In time, people all around the world knew and followed this devotion. When
she died, hardly any of her sisters at the convent knew that humble, cheerful
Saint Faustina was the Apostle of Divine Mercy.
Activity
Today, pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy with your rosary. If you can do so, it’s especially good to pray this
devotion during what is called “the hour of Mercy” between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.,
which is the hour of Jesus’ death on the cross. How will you make the Chaplet
of Divine Mercy a regular part of your Christian life?
