May 15: St. Isidore the Farmer

St. Isidore the Farmer

History

Isidore lived in Spain in the late 1100s. He worked on a farm outside of Madrid. Every morning before he went out to the fields, he went to Mass. He and his wife were very holy people. Isidore worked long hours, and he worked diligently, understanding that even a simple farmer plays a very important role in this world by providing food and other goods. Sometimes, angels even helped him work the farm, and sometimes, God did miracles for Isidore, such as multiplying food so he could share his lunch with a group of beggars.

Activity

This is a very important time of year for farmers. It’s time to plant, to tend to newborn calves and chick and other livestock. And everything they do has a chance of not working out. Sometimes the weather can be too dry or too wet. Sometimes a tornado will wipe out everything, or an equipment problem or injury will keep a farmer from doing what they need to do for a successful harvest in the fall. Today at every meal, pray for all the farmers in the world, and ask St. Isidore to pray for them, too.

Saint Isidore, pray for us!
