| St. Raymond of Pennafort |
History
Raymond was a Dominican priest. Once, Father Raymond talked to King James of Aragon about a particular sin. King James promised he would change his ways, but he didn’t. Father Raymond decided to leave the island where he and the king were staying. He couldn’t find a ship to take him away because the king had said he would punish any captain who helped him. So Father Raymond spread his cloak on the water, tying one corner to a stick to act as a sail. He made the Sign of the Cross, stepped onto the cloak and sailed back to Spain. This miracle made the king very sorry for his sin and he changed his ways for good.
Activity
Get some scraps of fabric, a few lightweight action figures (Lego characters are good), some toothpicks, and a bowl of water. Cut the fabric into a rectangular shape about 3” x 2” to serve as Saint Raymond’s cloak. Poke a toothpick in one corner. Carefully lay the opposite corner of the clock on on the water so that it floats. Now lay the action figure on top of the fabric. How long before it sinks? Try it with different kinds of fabric. Can you understand why King James was so impressed with Saint Raymond’s miraculous floating cloak, he gave up sinning?
