"The Virgin of Carmel Saving the Souls in Purgatory" from the Brooklyn Museum |
History
Christians have always prayed for other Christians who have died. We should remember these people in prayer daily, but the Church gives us a special day each year to make an extra effort. By the year 998, All Souls Day was an annual feast in many parts of the world. People visit cemeteries to decorate the graves of their family members. In Mexico, All Souls Day is the end of a three-day festival called “The Day of the Dead”, where the souls of dead loved ones are celebrated.
Activity
If you can, bring flowers to the graves of people in your family. If you live to far away, try to attend Mass. Another option is to look up “Day of the Dead” activities in your community that are open to the public
