April 4: St. Isidore of Seville

St. Isidore of Seville

History

Isidore was born into a whole family of saints. His big brothers Leander and Fulgentius were smart and holy, and so was his big sister, Florentina, who was a nun. Leander was much older than Isidore. He was bishop of Seville and Isidore’s teacher, and he was very demanding. Once, Isidore was so frustrated with being unable to learn as quickly as Leander wanted him to, he ran away. As he sat in the woods, Isidore noticed that a rock had a hole in it, made by water dripping onto it over many years. Isidore suddenly realized that if he took on his studies one “drop” at a time, he could learn everything Leander wanted him to and maybe even more. In time, Isidore became so smart, he wrote a dictionary and an encyclopedia that was used 900 years! He also succeeded Leander as bishop.

Activity

We all have a lot to learn, and it’s easy to get frustrated when we don’t think we are learning something as quickly as God wants us to. To help you remember to take things one “drop” at a time, pick up a stone bead or pendant from a craft store and some leather or parachute cording and make yourself a necklace or bracelet. Every time you see the stone with a hole in it, you can remind yourself, “One drop at a time.”

Saint Isidore, pray for us!
