February 7: Saint Moses

History

Saint Moses was a hermit who lived alone in the desert of Syria and Egypt. He worked with a group of people called the Saracens. The Saracens were “nomads,” meaning people who didn’t stay in one part of the country, but moved their tents from place to place. At one point, the Romans took over the region. Queen Mavia of the Saracens demanded that Moses be made their bishop. Moses was too modest to be happy about that, but as bishop he was able to keep peace between the Romans and the Saracens.

Activity

To celebrate the feast of Saint Moses, make some roz bel laban, a favorite dessert in Egypt. It’s basically a delicious rice pudding flavored with either rose water or orange blossom water. (You can buy rose water and orange blossom water at a Middle Eastern grocery store or a health food store.)

Saint Moses, pray for us!
