History
George was a Roman soldier
– in fact, he was one of Emperor Diocletian’s favorite soldiers. Diocletian was
a pagan, and he hated Christians. He started killing any Christian he met…and
he didn’t know that George was a Christian, too. George could have hidden his
faith, but he didn’t. He marched right up to Diocletian and told him to stop
being so unfair and cruel. Then he quit the army. This is why George is shown
slaying a dragon in pictures – the dragon represents evil, and George was not
afraid to stand up to evil.
Activity
Saint George’s courage and
loyalty to Christ earned him the title of Patron of England. In the old days,
today was a national holiday in England. So, celebrate with bangers and mash
for dinner – sausages and mashed potatoes with onion gravy.
