March 3: Saint Katharine Drexel

St. Katharine Drexel in 1915

History

Saint Katharine Drexel was born in Philadelphia in 1858. She loved Jesus, and she loved her neighbor. In fact, she was particularly concerned about Native American and African-American people. Since her family was fairly wealthy, she started out by donating money, but soon she realized that God was calling her to give herself, not just her money. She started a new religious community called the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. She put in her own money to serve these people – $20 million – and personal traveled west of the Mississippi to start schools, including Xavier University in New Orleans.

Activity

Sister Katharine Drexel’s work is still going strong. You can read about it here.  And if you can, make a donation of any amount in honor of Saint Katharine Drexel.

Saint Katharine Drexel, pray for us!
